At Blue Marlin Komodo, we pride ourselves on being as eco-friendly as possible. As Labuan Bajo's only 100% A.W.A.R.E., PADI 5 star dive resort, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce our energy footprint, conduct marine & shore clean ups and support environmental charities.
Our weekly trips to the deserted Sabolan Islands include a lunch break on one of the beautiful tropical beaches. Unfortunately, this beach is often littered with rubbish and debris carried in by the tides or discarded by careless tourists. Blue Marlin Komodo conducts regular beach clean-ups, which our guests are more than welcome to participate in.
As members of the Dive Operators Community of Komodo (DOCK), we support Clean Up the World. Clean up the World is a global campaign that inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment. Held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program, it mobilises an estimated 35 million people across 130 countries each year. This past year, more than 320 kids from local schools, all DOCK dive centres and the local community came out and did their part in cleaning our community.
If you join one of our liveaboards, you will have the opportunity to support local communities directly. We encourage our guests to buy souvenirs from local craftsmen whose previous income was earned by fishing within the national park. Conservation efforts have succeeded by banning fishing within the park, impacting the local communities and necessitating a transition towards sustainable tourism. Illegal fishing is still very much a problem, but by buying souvenirs through these outlets, you support the park and community by encouraging this change.
Blue Marlin Komodo works closely with Reef Check Indonesia, participating in monthly reef surveys and we support both Manta Watch and Shark Guardians by routinely compiling our data of sightings of key species on dive trips. Each of these organisations are active in the education and further research of these threatened species. In fact, Blue Marlin Komodo has adopted our very own Manta, Ariane, who is regularly sighted within the park.
As part of PADI’s green initiative, we have switched to digital training manuals. This means less waste for the planet and less weight for your luggage! For every course, we also donate USD 10 to Project A.W.A.R.E.. The Project A.W.A.R.E. Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet – one dive at a time. With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project A.W.A.R.E. supports an unprecedented global movement of divers acting in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change. Project A.W.A.R.E. is focusing in on two major ocean issues –Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, or more simply put: trash in our ocean.
